Interview with Without

Ok its been damn long time actually for this crappy webzine doing an interview and finally this time I would honourly mention that I have a chance to present you an interview with one of my favorite Yokohama emo band to date, without! The band just put out their 3 year discography containing songs compilation of their previous releases. Ok probably I should not talk too much and you should check out the interview below. Enjoy!


01. Can you tell me how the band get formed??
Three of us, 2 guitars and drums, first we met in a band club of the university in Yokohama and we got formed the Without after graduation. A few months later, some members left our band then new member, Ozawa joined. That’s how we got formed Without.

02. Would you describe me about your hometown's scene, Yokohama??
Yokohama is a big city but there are some green places. There is a fucking great area to drink that is called “Noge”. We often go there and get drunk every time. Some bands in Yokohama wants to have live shows in Tokyo but it is important for us to have it at Yokohama.

03. As being noticed, some of you were in a band called Slugger Machine. So how about any rest of you?? In what bands have you been before??
 Yes. As you said, the basist, Ozawa was a support member in the SLUGGER MACHINE. He was also a member of Weave.( https://t.co/a4zoJMquJZ ) And I (gt/vo) have been in KANARI since 2013. It’s trio and kind of alternative band. https://t.co/xp07sqq7Qc

04. Tell me about RAFT Records?? How it gets started?? 
The owner Yoshino is our friend. He originally sold his favorite band’s physical at shows. When he started his own label, he suggested us to release together. That was our first EP “westgate No.5” and we are the first band of the label.

05. Tell me about the 3 Years Discography Compilation album?? Is this a sign that you'll get disbanded?? I'm so anxious that my favorite band gets disbanded haha 
Don’t worry! One of the reasons we release it is that we want more people to listen to our songs. The another reason is that our band activity was all cancelled because of Covid-19 pandemic and I had much free time than before, so we released the “3 Years Memory”.

06. You did put out a three way split between Good Luck 4 Your Fun and A& Works, would you tell me about how the idea comes to put out the split?? 
It was our boss Yoshino’s idea. He had known both bands and arranged it.

07. Is it true that selling physical releases in Japan much easier than earning money through digital platforms like spotify, deezer, bandcamp, etc?? 
That is a difficult issue. To be honest, we don’t care much care about earning money by selling. But in our se, that is true that selling physical releases is much easier because basically we sell them at live houses we play.

08. Any plans for the band touring abroad?? 
We don’t have any plans…. But we hope to have touring abroad, maybe in Indonesia first!! My another band KANARI had some shows with Indonesian band, ELEVENTWELFTH before. They were just awesome!

09. Anyway can you tell me about the food that everyone has to taste when they come to Yokohama??
 Definitely RAMEN ! (Japanese noodle) It’s “YOKOHAMA IE-KEI” style, ramen soup consists of rich pork and soy sauce. This style is quite different from other basic style of Japanese noodle. We often have it after drinking. “Yoshimura-ya” is the most popular restaurant but my favorites are “Suehiro-ya” and “Hikari-ya”.

10. Mention me your top 3 7-11/Family Mart drink??
Why 7-11 / Family mart ? haha What do you want to know about ?

11. Now I wanna ask about the creative/the songwriting process, can you tell me about that?? Who's initially write the song or probably you just jam it on the studio together?? 
I (right side guitar) and Urushi (left side guitar) bring some melody or guitar riff and then we work together to create it in a studio.

12. Any good Yokohama bands that everyone should check out to?? 
You should check out “Yubiori”. They got formed last year and the band has triple guitars. It’s kind of Japanese alternative / indie emo band. https://t.co/VqIJZZPzxd
And “acle” is also nice band. You might know this band because they released from Raft records. They stopped their band activity but I heard that they will start it again so I’m looking forward to see their live show.

13. Ok... Any last words you would like to say??
 We can’t do anything about our band because of covid-19 pandemic but we are so glad many people listen to our songs online. When the situation back to be normal, we want to go everywhere for tour. Of course to Indonesia and some Asian countries !! And we are so excited to announce you that we are making new release and it will be soon. Thank you for this opportunity.
