Interview with Missed Out Records

Okay after for a bit we just paused urself for doing and posting about interview stuff, here we are again having someone to get interviewed by this dumb webzine. And this time we have Doug from Missed Out Records! Yes I'm not telling you that this is such nepotism thing but one of an inspiring thing about this label is that not only he press his own records but also Doug also running his own duplication matters up to the printing one! Yes I cant just help wonder about such an independence spirit he is practicing now! Okay lets just dig out the interview below.

01.First question, tell me the main reason why you do a label??
I started Missed Out Records because I want to make an impact on the world (even if it is just a small one). I’m less interested in making money and more interested in sharing quality music that people may never have found on their own.

02.Could you tell me about the name itself??
I know that there are plenty of bands out there that are under-represented and many of my favorite artists I discovered shortly after they had disbanded. I would grimace knowing that I would never be able to see said band live and that I ‘missed out’ on the opportunity. This concept also applies to missing out on buying a limited release. As a musician and avid vinyl/cassette collector myself, I know how it feels to wish you had got a copy but instead it is sold out and all you can do is hope somebody sells their copy or that it gets re-pressed.

03.So you have your own tape duplication machine, would you please tell me about the maintanance thing?? How you got any spare parts once it has a problem??
Yes I do own two tape duplication machines: a Telex 1 & 1 and a Telex 1 & 3. As their names imply, one will duplicate 1 master to 1 copy and the other does 1 master to 3 copies. Unfortunately, what I discovered is that these particular machines are great for duplicating voice audio recordings at high speeds. However, when you use them to duplicate music recordings a lot of integrity is lost. Therefore, I do not recommend those model numbers for duplicating music. As far as maintenance goes, it is mainly just cleaning the moving parts with isopropyl alcohol every so often. If you have an interior problem there are manuals online (depending on the make and model number) to help you in solving any issues.

04.Comparing to any pressing plants. Is it much affordable to press your own record by your own machine??
It’s never affordable to press vinyl hahaha. I am working with other labels to offer our first vinyl record release which will be done through a plant. Luckily when the total cost is split across a number of international labels, it is much more reasonable but otherwise it can get quite expensive. To do it on your own is another story. I recently purchased an old Rek-O-Kut Record Lathe Cutter (Master Pro M12). This equipment is extremely hard to come across and was not cheap. I lucked out and was able to find one in great working shape from an estate sale in Tennessee. It will hopefully give me the ability to cut my own lathe records for the label in the future. These would be extremely limited and each one would be hand-cut. That’s something I hope to have mastered by 2020. That being said, I still have a massive learning curve of learning how to cut my own records which is not the same as a record being pressed. I would recommend going through a plant if you are serious.

05.Tell whats your personal choice among other catalogues on Missed Out Records
Oh man, it’s hard to pick favorites because everything that has been released so far are all extraordinarily meaningful to me.  If I had to pick I would say the compilations (001, 010, 018) are my favorite. For each one of them I would spend months in advance contacting artists, meticulously scrutinizing the order of the songs, all the while trying to find the perfect artwork. Many times the tracklist would change last minute before releasing. Each one are a passion project and I am so proud to help these bands form new friendships, find new fans, and all the while contribute to a work of art that hopefully will be enjoyed for many years to come.

06.Would you tell me why you're open handed to any abroad bands??
In the past ten years or so I’ve really delved into music outside of the scope of mainstream media in the USA. I was captivated by the band Raein from Italy as well as Daitro from France. I realized that there are so many artists out there that I am unaware of that I would probably really enjoy. So I started to seek out those artists and now listen to a large variety of international music. I know that there are probably people like me who would enjoy that music but regularly would never stumble across it on their own. I hope my label can help those people find music like that.

07.Could you tell me about the local scene in Pennsylvania??
Lol well I’ve been in and out of it. I went to college in Lehigh Valley which is a birthplace of some classic emo acts like Snowing, Hightide Hotel, and Street Smart Cyclist. This is all the while very close to Philadelphia (Algernon Cadwallader, Modern Baseball, Marietta) and surrounding areas (Circa Survive – Doylestown, We Were Skeletons – Lancaster). There are many more examples to pull from but those all come to mind.  I’ve been to many shows ranging from a jam crowded basement (Kat Kat Fest) to a sold-out Union Transfer.  The scene is alive and well and evolving. I’m hoping the resurgence in vinyl music and cassette tapes will also imply a resurgence in people getting out to shows and supporting local artists.

08.Have you ever got encountered with any shipping problems?? Tell me the worst one??
So far I have been fortunate enough to say I have not had any issues shipping my products so far. I do my best to really package them all safely with extra bubble wrap. I do have a horror story as a buyer though. I purchased from a label (who will remain unnamed) that shipped me a package that had broken cassettes and cracked vinyl. I realize this was not the intent of the shipper, however the box that was sent to me did not have any indicator that the contents were fragile! It is common practice when shipping fragile items (like cassettes and records) to mark it as so. That being said, they did offer a refund and I learned from their mistake and now always mark my packages as fragile!

09.Tell me where the furthest place have your label ever sent??
It’s hard to tell. I did create 50 cassettes for the band Standards and saw via social media that one of their fans has a copy in New Zealand. That seems pretty far! Otherwise I’ve shipped orders to Canada, Germany, and Spain!

10.Mention me 5 the most delicious american fast food that any entity on this earth should try?? Whitecastle
Bojangles
Chik-Fil-A
Wendy’s
Burger King
the first 2 are only available in certain regions. There are MANY more to choose from but from my experience, those are the tastiest 😊

11.Any last words you would like to say??
I want to say thank you for asking me these questions, thank you to anyone reading the responses, and thank you to any and all bands who choose to work with me. It’s been a lot of fun and I can’t wait to see what the future has in store!
